AC Compressor Problems

Signs of AC compressor trouble, why the capacitor and contactor get checked first, and what a compressor replacement costs.

Safety first. If you smell gas (a rotten egg smell) or hear hissing near a gas appliance, leave the building now. Do not use light switches, phones or anything that can spark inside. From a safe place, call 911 and your gas company (Enbridge Gas Utah emergency line: 1-800-767-1689). (Source: Enbridge Gas) If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds or people feel headache, dizziness, nausea or confusion, get everyone outside to fresh air and call 911. (Source: U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) Do not try to repair gas, refrigerant or electrical parts yourself.

Safe things to check

Stop here

Do not reset a breaker that keeps tripping. Repeated tripping is a sign of an electrical fault that needs a technician. Federal rules require anyone who adds or removes refrigerant, or attaches gauges to an AC or heat pump, to hold EPA Section 608 certification, and refrigerant for home AC and heat pumps can only be sold to certified technicians. What a technician checks

Before condemning a compressor, a technician checks the parts that start and power it (capacitor, contactor, wiring) and the refrigerant charge. Angi notes that a failing capacitor can lead to other parts failing if it is not replaced. (Source: Angi)

Typical cost

Angi: compressor replacement about $800 to $2,300, and up to about $2,800; evaporator coil replacement $600 to $2,000. When repairs approach the cost of a new system, Angi says replacement is often the better long-term choice. (Source: Angi) National figures; not a quote.

FAQ

Can I fix this myself?

Only the simple checks listed above. Gas, refrigerant and electrical work needs a trained HVAC technician.

Can this site tell me what is wrong with my furnace or AC?

No. Utah HVAC Help is general information, not a diagnosis. Gas, refrigerant and high-voltage electrical parts need a trained HVAC technician. If you smell gas or a CO alarm sounds, leave the building and call 911 and your gas company from outside.
