AC Running but Not Cooling

Air conditioner runs but the house stays warm in Utah. Safe checks, what a technician looks at, and typical repair costs.

Safety first. If you smell gas (a rotten egg smell) or hear hissing near a gas appliance, leave the building now. Do not use light switches, phones or anything that can spark inside. From a safe place, call 911 and your gas company (Enbridge Gas Utah emergency line: 1-800-767-1689). (Source: Enbridge Gas) If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds or people feel headache, dizziness, nausea or confusion, get everyone outside to fresh air and call 911. (Source: U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) Do not try to repair gas, refrigerant or electrical parts yourself.

Safe things to check

Stop here

Do not open the outdoor unit, touch wiring, or add refrigerant. Federal rules require anyone who adds or removes refrigerant, or attaches gauges to an AC or heat pump, to hold EPA Section 608 certification, and refrigerant for home AC and heat pumps can only be sold to certified technicians. What a technician checks

Common causes a technician checks include a weak or failed capacitor, a stuck contactor, low refrigerant from a leak, dirty coils, and airflow problems. ENERGY STAR says dirty coils make the system run longer, and too much or too little refrigerant lowers efficiency and shortens equipment life. (Source: ENERGY STAR (U.S. EPA))

Typical cost

Angi reports AC capacitor replacement at about $200 to $400 (average about $250) and contactor replacement at about $190 to $250, up to about $320. A compressor replacement is far more: about $800 to $2,300, up to about $2,800. (Source: Angi; Angi) National figures; not a quote.

FAQ

Can I fix this myself?

Only the simple checks listed above. Gas, refrigerant and electrical work needs a trained HVAC technician.

Can this site tell me what is wrong with my furnace or AC?

No. Utah HVAC Help is general information, not a diagnosis. Gas, refrigerant and high-voltage electrical parts need a trained HVAC technician. If you smell gas or a CO alarm sounds, leave the building and call 911 and your gas company from outside.
