Furnace Not Heating
Gas furnace runs but no heat, or will not start, in a Utah winter. Safety first, safe checks, typical repairs and costs.
Safe things to check
- Set the thermostat to Heat and a few degrees above room temperature.
- Check the air filter. ENERGY STAR says to check the air filter every month, change it if it looks dirty, and change it at least every 3 months. A dirty filter slows airflow, makes the system work harder and can lead to early failure. (Source: ENERGY STAR (U.S. EPA))
- Make sure the furnace door or panel is closed; many furnaces will not run with it open.
Stop here
If you smell gas, leave now. If you smell gas, leave the area right away, warn others, and from a safe place call 911 and Enbridge Gas Utah at 1-800-767-1689. Do not turn gas valves on or off, do not use switches, phones or anything that can spark near the leak, and do not start vehicles nearby. Gas leaks cannot be reported online. (Source: Enbridge Gas) Do not relight pilots, open the burner area, or adjust the gas valve.
What a technician checks
Angi says the ignitor fails more than any other furnace part, and flame sensors are another common, low-cost fix. ENERGY STAR says a heating check-up should cover gas connections, gas pressure, burner combustion and the heat exchanger. (Source: Angi; ENERGY STAR (U.S. EPA))
Typical cost
Angi: national average furnace repair $318, most between $133 and $505; ignitor $150 to $250 ($350 to $500 after hours); flame sensor $150 to $250. (Source: Angi) National figures; not a quote.

FAQ
Can I fix this myself?
Only the simple checks listed above. Gas, refrigerant and electrical work needs a trained HVAC technician.
Can this site tell me what is wrong with my furnace or AC?
No. Utah HVAC Help is general information, not a diagnosis. Gas, refrigerant and high-voltage electrical parts need a trained HVAC technician. If you smell gas or a CO alarm sounds, leave the building and call 911 and your gas company from outside.
